Welcome, dear travelers and adventurers!

If you are here to try something new and unforgettable in Budapest, you are in right place!

Budapest has so many different sides, and each of them offers a special experience. From thermal baths and ruin pubs to quiet cafés, museums, concerts, or even cave diving and ice skating in Városliget — it’s a city where there’s always something new to try.

Since I moved here for university, I’ve been slowly collecting the things that make this place unforgettable for me. In this post, I wanted to bring them together — the activities, places, and little moments that show why Budapest is worth exploring.

If you are ready grab your camera, put on your comfiest shoes, and let’s start checking off your Budapest to-do list!

🛁 Relax in Budapest’s Thermal Baths

Budapest is famous for its historic thermal baths — perfect for a slow morning or a chilly winter day.
My favorites:

  • Széchenyi Thermal Bath – Iconic yellow building, outdoor pools, and the famous chess players.
  • Gellért Thermal Bath – Stunning Art Nouveau interior.
  • Rudas Baths – Ottoman-era vibes with a rooftop pool overlooking the Danube.

💡 Tip: Go early on a weekday to avoid crowds, and bring your own towel to save on rental fees.

🎉 Try a Sparty (Spa + Party)

Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like — a late-night pool party with music, lights, and dancing, held inside Széchenyi Baths. Definitely not your typical spa experience!

🚢 Take a Day or Night River Cruise

Seeing Budapest from the Danube is magical — especially at night when the Parliament and bridges glow. You can choose a sightseeing cruise, a dinner cruise, or even a wine-tasting boat tour.

🌄 Enjoy the Views from Gellért Hill

One of the best viewpoints in Budapest. The walk is a bit steep, but the panoramic view of the Danube and the city is worth every step.

🚡 Ride the Budapest Funicular

Take the historic funicular up Castle Hill. It’s short but iconic, and the views of the Danube are gorgeous.

📸 Best Views & Photo Spots in Budapest

Budapest is ridiculously photogenic. Don’t miss:

  • Fisherman’s Bastion – Disney vibes and sweeping Danube views.
  • Batthyány tér – Perfect Parliament photo spot across the river.
  • St. Stephen’s Basilica Dome – 360° city view.
  • Statue of St. Gellért – Overlooks the Bridge and river.
  • Clark Ádám tér – At the base of the Chain Bridge, a must-see.
  • Ervin Szabó Library – Baroque interiors, feels like a movie set.
  • Párisi Udvar (Parisian Passage) – Gorgeous Art Nouveau shopping arcade.

🗿 Hunt for Hidden Mini Statues

Scattered around the city are tiny bronze statues — like the Fat Policeman or the Little Princess.
💡 Tip: Type the artist’s name “Kolodko” into Google Maps to find them all — it’s like a treasure hunt through Budapest’s streets.

🎶 Watch the Musical Fountain at Margaret Island

In summer, this fountain “dances” to classical and pop music. Perfect for a lazy evening with snacks.

🎭 Madame Tussauds Budapest

Get up close with lifelike wax figures of celebrities, historical icons, and even Hungarian legends. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon, especially with friends. You can take lots of instagramable photos here!

⛸ Ice Skating in Winter – Városliget Ice Rink

In winter, Budapest feels like a snow globe — and nothing beats ice skating at Városliget Ice Rink, right next to Heroes’ Square and Vajdahunyad Castle. It’s one of Europe’s oldest and largest outdoor rinks, and the view of the illuminated castle makes the whole experience magical.

💡 Tip: You can rent skates on-site, and going in the evening adds an extra fairytale vibe. Especially when christmas markets’s and funfair’s around!

🚤 Boating in Summer – Városliget Lake

When the ice rink closes, the same lake turns into a calm boating spot in summer. You can rent a rowboat or pedal boat and float around Vajdahunyad Castle.

🛶 Kayaking or SUP on the Danube

In summer, you can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and see Budapest from a whole new perspective — right on the water.

🩰 Experience Hungarian Folk Dance or Live Orchestra

From folk dance shows with colorful costumes to classical concerts in historic venues, Budapest’s culture comes alive on stage.
Popular options:

  • Danube Palace Folk Show
  • Hungarian State Opera performance
  • Evening classical concert at St. Stephen’s Basilica

  • Candlelight Concerts

🍷 Wine & Pálinka Tastings

Hungary is known for its wines (like Tokaji) and pálinka (fruit brandy). Join a tasting experience to discover local flavors in a social, cozy atmosphere.

🛍 Go Shopping – From Luxury to Outlets

Whether you’re hunting for high fashion or unique souvenirs:

  • Fashion Street – International brands in a pretty pedestrian zone. A little bit pricier.
  • Central Market Hall – Souvenirs, paprika, handmade goods, and local snacks.

  • Arena Mall – Large mall with fashion, electronics, and food.
  • WestEnd City Center – Budapest’s largest mall.
  • Premier Outlet Budapest – Big outlet mall outside the city with major brands at discount prices (worth the trip if you love shopping).

💡 Tip: Premier Outlet is easiest to reach by car or bus — plan half a day for it.

🌙 Nightlife in Budapest

Budapest’s nightlife is famous for a reason:

  • Ruin Pubs – Szimpla Kert (legendary)
  • Clubs – Ötkert, Heaven, Instant-Fogas , Arsenal for dancing until sunrise.
  • Rooftop Bars – The Duchess (luxury vibes), High Note Skybar (St. Stephen’s view), 360 Bar (panoramic cityscape), and Leo Rooftop (Parliament view).

🎊 Experience Budapest on Special Days & Festivals

Budapest isn’t just about sights — the city transforms during its special days and festivals. If your trip matches one of these, don’t miss the chance to join locals in celebrating but don’t forget that in special days everywhere is much more crowded:

Christmas Markets (Late November – December)
The city glows with fairy lights, mulled wine, and festive stands. The most famous ones are at Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen’s Basilica (with a light show on the church).
💡 Tip: Try kürtőskalács (chimney cake) warm from the oven!

🎆 New Year’s Eve on the Danube (December 31)
Budapest lights up with fireworks. Locals gather along the Danube, especially near the Chain Bridge and Parliament. Many river cruises also host special New Year’s dinners and parties.

🐣 Easter Festivals (March–April)
Expect traditional Hungarian crafts, Easter foods (ham, eggs, kalács bread), and folk music. Buda Castle usually hosts an Easter Fair with family-friendly activities.

🍷 Budapest Wine Festival (September)
Held at Buda Castle, this is paradise for wine lovers. Taste Hungary’s famous Tokaji and hundreds of other local wines while enjoying panoramic city views.

🎶 Sziget Festival (August)
One of Europe’s biggest music festivals, taking place on Óbuda Island. A week of concerts, art, and international vibes.

🇭🇺 St. Stephen’s Day (August 20)
Hungary’s national holiday — with parades, air shows, and breathtaking fireworks over the Danube. Definitely one of the most magical nights in Budapest.
